With this simplicity you have to ensure you are precise, as Sunblaze can soon start racking up the deaths as you try to land a perfect jump. Once leaving solid ground, your jumps and dashes are limited so planning ahead and trying things out becomes quite important. There is only room to dash horizontally so plan your move wisely. Josie is very simple to control in the game, with a jump button and a dash button. If you don’t want to see the blood aka strawberry jam on the walls, which is quite discrete and feint, you can turn this off in the options. The soundtrack also blends with the game wonderfully and hits those nostalgic bones in your body. For example, when moving around the screen, as Josie dashes past cables and lights they move, even though they are part of the background. The game is well designed, and there are some little details which make all the difference. Hard mode certainly notches things up a level, and even when things look simple, try try again! The reward for collecting all of these in each chapter, is unlocking hard mode. For those who like a good collectable, each of the original 6 chapters come with a number of ‘data cubes’ to collect. The difficulty does curve up through the chapters, but as it does, so does your own skill and muscle memory, and knowledge on how best to navigate through each screen. Navigating your way through each screen, using and avoiding obstacles, and destroying drones to be able to access the goal brings its challenge and makes sure this is not just an easy game. As well as your usual spikes, look out for saws, one touch blocks, lasers, and crates of TNT to name a few. This may sound easy, but as the chapters increase so do the number of obstacles and complexity to reach each goal. The game does a great job of flowing and transitioning from one level to the next. The one great aspect of Sunblaze is every level is one screen only, no scrolling, what you see is what you get.
